Web Work: A History of Internet Art
Net art is a term to describe contemporary art that utilizes the internet as the primary resource for sharing and creating art. This concept was discovered in 1995 by a Slovenian artist and took the art world by storm. As the internet became a more common thing, many fields adapted their expertise to it. For instance, designing and selling clothes, was something that could only reach your local community family and friends. Because of the internet, talent and hard work could reach a massive audience all over the world. The same goes for Net Art. Art is not only shared through the internet but created by utilizing our new developments as a society. A brilliant project that I gravitated towards was “Desktop”, a seminal art show that was created in 1997. People were urged to submit captures of their CPU’s desktop with all closed tabs revealing insights to their style, personality, and creativity. As time goes on, this field gets bigger and bigger incorporating many new styles of internet art. I am a supporter of internet art as I believe it is a way for all people, no matter where they are and who they know to share their creativity. For a long time, art was only limited to the wealthy. This exclusivity was rooted in factors like access to means and social hierarchy. Although these standards were already broken by the time internet art arose, “NET.ART” acts as an inclusive avenue for people from all walks of life to share their creativity.
