My initial inspiration for my 433 project was the “real” world portrayed in the movie “Coraline”. The world that is portrayed in the movie is very repetitive, mundane, dull, and boring. The only heated emotions in this world are Coraline’s frustrations with it. Although I still took inspiration from the initial idea, my 433-project ended up being a more modern portrayal of a mundane world. The title of the project was “I hate my job”. This soundtrack is supposed to take you through the dull day of a lonely character who has the same repetitive cycle of a desk job. It starts off when the character wakes up in the morning, gets ready for work, and makes his way to his job. I started with mundane “work tasks” by using the sounds of cutting paper and writing while keeping the background sound quiet. I think the most successful part was the frustrated typing sounds. Since there were a lot of typing sounds that were uploaded to the shared folder, I decided to have fun with it. Overlapping all the typing sounds and adding effect created this buildup of loudness and chaos that I believe properly portrayed the frustration. On the other hand, I think a part of the soundtrack that was not that successful might have been in the middle where I overlapped sounds of eating with background chatter and socialization. That way the people talking, and the noises were muffled in the background while the sounds of the character eating was so loud and prominent was supposed to portray being on the outside. Maybe it was a lunch break, and everyone was out eating, talking, and laughing while our character sat by themselves observing. A struggle I found myself recognizing during the process was not using music. We turn to background music in every auditory component of our lives, and I liked the challenge of either not using it or trying to use it in a non-conventional way.
