My zine will be a visual adaptation of how I would spend 7 perfect days in my home country, Kuwait. With a life that is so different than the one I live here in Colorado; I think that this theme would be great way to reminisce on perfect days back home. For the front page I wanted to include a small map of the country and in some way signify the location of my home, either with pin or something like that. The map of the country is one that everyone in Kuwaiti is familiar with. Some people even create jewelry like necklaces with the outline of the map. After that I could start with a visit to one of the most famous local restaurants we have. Every birthday, celebration, and occasion are usually spent in this beautiful Japanese fusion restaurant called White Robata. Another page would be of my favorite local cycling studio in Kuwait which is a big part of my visits back home. It has a unique color way, logo, and studio that is immediately recognizable.
In the middle of the book where the spine flattens out, I was thinking of making it a black and white vintage looking piece that spreads across the two pages. This would include the historical landmarks and museums that are still visited to this day. Some examples of the architecture I’m thinking of including is “Abraj Kuwait”, “Sadu House”, and “Mubarkiya”. Another important part of a trip back home would be the beach houses which are commonly referred to as “Chalets”. This page can include my friend’s chalet which is usual where we spend our weekends and a jet boat. Another concept that is big in Kuwait are coffee shops. Coffee shop culture is so prominent so this page can include all the local places around the city. Something I was thinking of including is the fact that coffee shops don’t typically close until 10 or 11pm which is odd to places outside the middle east since caffeine is typically ingested in the mornings.
The concept that I am thinking of leaving for the last page would be “Zwaras”. This term is used to describe weekly family gatherings. This gathering is usually once a week and includes direct and extended family members. It usually happens in one’s grandparents’ house and is revolved around a meal (lunch or dinner). This part of our culture is important in one’s upbringing and is why I would like to wrap up the zine with it.
